Squirrels

Grey squirrel pest control

Description:

Squirrels have some character about them and are a fascinating creature to observe in the garden. The problem nowadays is they are increasingly giving up the traditional building of a “Dray”, and taking the easy option of using our roof spaces. Like all rodents, squirrels are constantly gnawing; this is not so good when it happens to be on our roof timbers and electrical cables.

Treatment:

Within the United Kingdom we are governed by strict guidelines set out by Parliament. In 1932 the Destructive Imported Animals Act states that it as an offence to release grey squirrels back into the wild. This may seem a bit outdated as we now consider the grey squirrel to be a natural part of our countryside; but many people forget that the Victorians introduced this species of squirrel. As a result of this parliamentary act we have only one course of action available, which is to humanely dispatch the squirrel. The method of control is to place a very powerful trap that has been approved for the purpose into the area where the squirrels are living. Traps must be visually inspected on a daily basis; the person living at the property does this, as it would prove too costly to send a technician around once a day. Once we have been informed of the capture, one of our technicians will attend to remove it. Quite often we find that more than one visit is required, as we do not know how many squirrels are occupying the roof space. It is important that the point of entry is identified and proofed to prevent re-infestation. N.B. It is not advisable to try and block off holes whilst the squirrels are living there, as they will often cause more damage trying to get back in.
